How do I attract the birds I want to my yard? That’s a question we often receive from customers. In order to answer it, we must understand the natural environment of the birds we wish to attract and try to make the area in which we feed them as close to that environment as possible. There are three essential elements to attracting wild birds: (1) food, (2) water, and (3) shelter.  In this issue we address the questions of what kind of feeders and food to offer.  In future issues we will discuss the need for water and how you can provide appropriate shelter in your yard.

THE FEEDER AND FEED

In order to survive, different species have developed different areas on and above the ground in which they feed.  Based on these observations, five types of man-made feeders have been developed to replicate these environments:  (1) platforms, (2) tubes, (3) bottles, (4) baskets and (5) fruit feeders.

Platform Feeders: Cardinals, Doves Sparrows, Juncos, and the Blue Jays etc. feed primarily on the ground. If we want to attract these birds, we must offer food on a flat surface (not necessarily directly on the ground) which is sufficiently large to accommodate them. A common approach is to provide a “platform” feeder which comes in different sizes and styles. The simplest is an open four-sided feeder with screening on the surface placed either:  (1) on the ground, (2) on a pole a few feet above the ground, or (3) hanging from a limb or shepard’s hook. The advantage of this type of feeder is that since there nothing on the feeder to obstruct the bird’s view, it can quickly see predators and fly to nearby shelter. The disadvantage is that the seed is left open to the elements and therefore requires frequent attention. Place only about inch of seed in these feeders so that rain and snow can quickly drain to avoid damage to the seed.

Another type of platform feeder has a hopper in which seed is placed and from which it is dispensed. The advantage of this feeder is that the hopper protects the seed from the elements.  However, you must be sure when you purchase one that there is sufficient space on the platform for the larger birds such as Cardinals and Jays to land and feed.

Tube Feeders:

Several of the smaller perching birds (Passerines) such as the Tufted Titmouse, Finches, Chickadees, etc. are seed eaters. They have three toes pointed forward and one backward for purposes of gripping a tree branch or twig on which they crack open seeds and feed. The tube feeder is designed for these birds. The tube replicates the tree trunk, the perches substitute for the branches and the feeding ports represent the seed pod.

Food:  We recommend that you use a seed blend for platform feeders and only one type of seed for tube feeders (e.g., sunflower for an open port feeder or thistle for a finch feeder.) Our reason is that since birds that feed on the ground find a variety of seeds, you will more closely match their natural environment if you provide seed blends in platform feeders. Similarly, since passerines find a single type of seed in any one tree or bush, use only one type of seed in tube feeders.

Wild birds will, indeed, eat a single type of seed placed on a platform feeder and a blend in a tube feeder. However, our observations are that the closer you match the natural environment of the bird you wish to attract, the more you will attract in the long run.

In all taxis around the city, there is registration number and a name for the driver. It can be taken in case of problem and then take the necessary procedures against the driver. This enhances the quality of service for the taxis in the town. The government takes rip-off drivers in all cities, especially Beijing and Xian, very seriously, and if they complain they will lose their license.

China Travel Tip#4 – Shopping:  China is a very big market and have very many customers. They offer clothing as the much bought sells. You can buy clothes but in middle size, the largest sizes may not be found in regular cities but can be found in big cities.

Electronic devices such as cameras, DVDs, mobiles, and thing like this are not preferable to be bought in China. Hong Kong is a better place to find them. The overall market open from 10 am to 10 pm. Visa card is a good option to buy your products.

When purchasing, note that Chinese are experienced in sales. The price they ask can be double the actual price. You can look around on other sellers to know the actual price or to lower the price with the seller until he leaves you to go. You will then know the actual price of the good. The end result can be 25-40% from the starting price.

China Travel Tip#5 – medical treatment: in large hotels, there are good doctors that speak English. This offers good service for treatment. There are also large network of pharmacies in eacy city and in each store which is indicated by Green Cross. Try to store a book stage for the medicine because they cannot speak English.

In most mass production package type of medicines, the packaging will be written in Chinese on one side, English on the other. But in the stores that only sees the Chinese side. Take a good look, in turn most of packaging, which gives you a lot more confidence knowing that you can read the package

The impact of removing trees and hedgerows and building in the countryside has had a major impact on birds’ natural food sources and it particularly noticeable during the winter months.

Although rowan, hawthorn and yews may look as though they are abundant with berries there isn’t enough to go round. More and more birds rely on humans to supply extra food to them during the cold weather and are venturing into more urban errors to find this food.

There are a number of different types of food you can feed birds either putting on tables or in feeders or you can scatter some on the ground or in special trays for ground feeders.

Seed mixes are nutrient rich and can be specially formulated for one species or you can buy more general mixes that will attract all types of bird. Niger seed is becoming more popular in the UK because it attracts goldfinches and people appreciate their colourful displays as they flock to the feeders.

Make sure you buy your seed mix from a reputable supplier and use seed mixes for wild birds rather than caged or aviary birds.

Animal fat such as suet is an excellent treat for birds in the winter as gives them an instant energy boost as well as allowing birds to build up a fat reserve to see them through the freezing nights.

You can make your own fat feeders by filling old plastic containers such as yoghurt pots or drinks bottles with a mixture of suet, seeds and dried fruit or you can buy special fat balls or suet blocks from bird food suppliers.

Do not use hooks or nets when hanging your fat feeders as they can be harmful to birds if they get caught up in them.

Don’t throw away your kitchen scraps but put them out for birds. They will eat unsalted bacon, mild cheese, soaked dried fruit, cooked rice and nuts. In winter it is fine to put out whole nuts as there are no fledglings about who could choke on them.

It is also important that you put out fresh supplies of water in the winter as birds’ usual sources may be frozen over. You may see birds splashing about in the water but don’t worry about them getting cold. As well as water for drinking they need it for cleaning themselves.

Check that your bird bath’s water hasn’t frozen in the night and you can add a bird friendly disinfectant to it to prevent the spread of disease.

Feeding birds can encourage rats so whichever food you choose to put out for birds make sure that you keep feeding areas clean. Sweep up old food and use a scraper to remove dried food and droppings from your bird table.

By feeding birds during the winter you will not only be doing your bit for conservation but you will have the pleasure of seeing many birds visit your garden at a time of year when gardens can be quite dull.
