Birds – Parakeet Care

Posted: under Uncategorized.

Parakeets are one of America’s most popular birds today. They make great pets because they are very friendly, have a cheerful disposition and are very entertaining. They also have very beautiful bright color varieties. Parakeets don’t require a lot of maintenance or money.

Parakeets are also known as Budgies or Keets. They are one of the smallest members of the parrot family. They originate from a desert-like area of Australia where it doesn’t rain much, which makes parakeets very hardy birds. There are a variety of colors, such as yellows, dark greens, pastel blues, purples, solid whites and many combinations of several colors. The average life span of parakeets is 8 to 12 years.

In the wild, parakeets are flocking birds so they are used to companionship, so it is best to get more than one. However, keep the birds separate when they are young so that they will get used to humans. When they get older then you can put them together. If you plan on keeping just one bird, you should play with it as much as possible. You should also put a mirror in the cage so that they won’t feel so alone when you aren’t there.

You should choose the largest cage that you can afford for your parakeet. It needs to be large enough so that he can comfortably move around. You will also need room for toys and perches. The minimum size is 20″ X 12″ X 18″. Parakeets are very playful and inquisitive. Because of this, they enjoy playing with a variety of toys. They especially love shiny objects, bells, bright colors and objects they can move around with their beak. Be sure that the toys you purchase don’t contain any small parts that your bird could swallow and choke on.

Lots of parakeets take a long time to build trust in their owners. It will probably be very shy when you first get one. Every day you should just put your finger in the cage in front of the bird. Eventually it will get the courage to get on your finger. If you have the patience your bird will learn to trust you, but some birds even can take months to build trust.

Parakeets love to sing and chirp. They seem to love when you play music and will often sing along. When you are gone, you might want to leave the radio on for them. Most parakeets won’t learn to talk. However, it is possible to teach some of them if you are consistent.

Parakeets always need fresh food and water in the cage. They are vegetarians and like seeds, greens and fruits. Their food should have a large variety of millet seeds and grain. Ready made seed mixes are sold at pet stores and supermarkets. Other than the seed mix, you should also provide fresh greens. However, do not leave these in the cage long or they will spoil.

The best way to keep your bird healthy is by providing a good diet and by keeping the water and cage clean. Make sure you clean and sanitize all the toys and accessories in the cage also. Birds are very good at hiding illnesses so if you think your bird is acting strangely at all, be sure to take it to the vet.

Parakeets are fun to watch and make a great companion pet. If you provide the correct care for your bird and spend plenty of time with it, you will have a great pet for a long time to come.

The magic, the glamour, the beauty, the flair and the elegance of Luang Prabang demands one thing from you; that you travel this UNESCO Heritage Town in style. Located at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, this 700 year old city that resembles more of a town is strikingly well-preserved and demands your attention. There’s a reason why it is considered the country’s spiritual capital. And you will find out via a stylish and experiential trip.

The authentic Laos experience starts right away. Even before the arrival of Buddhism, citizens participated in an ancient tradition called the Baci ceremony. This ritual is of Animist origin and like most aspects of that belief got integrated into Buddhism. Important events like births, marriages ordination into monkhood, departing, returning and others all warrants a Baci ceremony, including your visit to Luang Prabang!

Next up is Lao culture at its most graceful. And you will certainly agree after watching the beautiful movements of Lao traditional performances such as the Lao Ramayana epic, local folk dances and tribal shows at the Royal Ballet Theater. Then it’s time to savor those tempting Lao flavors at L’Elephant, one of the town’s top restaurants.

Visit Luang Prabang’s top attraction, Wat Xieng Thong. This temple, situated along the banks of the Mekong is the town’s oldest at 461 years old. Glittering gold designs embedded onto a dark and burnished background as well as columns featuring a rich lacquer-like black with gold stenciling should catch anybody’s attention. Haw Kham, the former Royal Palace turned museum includes lots of fascinating relics that you should take a look at. Wat Sen and numerous other temples also await your arrival. And here’s where your tour becomes stylish; you can elect to experience the town via electric bike. Faster than a traditional bicycle but without the fumes that come with it, this is a fast, fun and easy way to explore Luang Prabang.

As majestic as the town itself, Kuang Si Falls warrants your visit. Its blue pools, splashing rapids, verdant fauna and relaxing atmosphere may make leaving the area difficult. If you want to continue with the water scenery, then Pak Ou Caves is where you need to go. The caverns, set along the banks of the Mekong are mystically filled with Buddha statues, ranging in size from the palm of your hand to your actual height. End the day as you embark on a fabulous river cruise aboard the Nava Mekong riverboat with a gourmet Lao dinner served onboard.

For early risers, observe or join the local residents along the streets to offer alms to the monks. This is the perfect opportunity to see one of Luang Prabang’s highlights, long lines of orange robed monks during their early morning ritual.

From magical monasteries to mystical cruises on the Mekong, this truly is Luang Prabang in Style. Can’t get enough? More exhilarating travel awaits as you explore the country via our Laos tours page.

Lightweight Travel Trailers

Posted: under Uncategorized.

Many people who want to add a small camper to their pick up truck discover that there are very few lightweight travel trailers to choose from. Weight is the problem not the variety of the RVs, since most of the existing recreational vehicles in the category are too heavy for a car or light pick-up truck to pull. A closer analysis of the market offer will show you that even the RV companies no matter if we are talking about rental companies or dealers have shown little interest in purchasing lightweight travel trailers. The reasoning for such a sales policy is very simple: these RVs are not that much in demand on the market, and therefore it is not profitable to keep them in stock.

The bathroom plumbing adds up quite a lot to the weight of the vehicle, particularly as the ceiling design has to be altered to. Therefore, some lightweight travel trailers have a rudimentary form of bathroom or lack it completely. Four types of vehicles fall in the category of lightweight travel trailers: the ultra-lightweights, the fiberglass eggs, the pop-up tent trailers and the teardrop ones. Each of the models has its advantage and downside: thus, the pop-ups are suitable for warmer climates, the fiberglass ones have a specific smell inside because of the materials they are made of, and the teardrops have offer pretty little space.

Lightweight travel vehicles of around 2,000 pounds could be the most convenient, but that very much depends on what the client aims at for both quality and use. In terms of size, the interior of lightweight travel trailers resembles a small or medium-sized bedroom in the most fortunate of cases, which is between 10 and 12 feet. This should be enough to accommodate a couple, but not for a family. Manufacturers provide the models ready furnished with basic appliances including a basic functional bathroom with or without a shower, a microwave and a stove.

The amenities included as well as the overall features of the vehicle determine the price for new and used lightweight travel trailers; the costs usually reach $10,000 or somewhere around this figure. The manufacturing year and the technical inspection remain key points to check when you want to purchase a used recreational vehicle. In the absence of a dealer in your local area, check online for more comprehensive resources. The databases you consult should be updated, otherwise you may be looking at items that are no longer in stock.

Should We Be Feeding the Birds?

Posted: under Uncategorized.

Who is Right?

Many people claim to be experts on this topic. In truth there are no experts on what the results truly are for feeding the birds in the winter. If we look at this subject back hundreds of years ago, you might have to agree that the opponents could be right. You could not just go to the home center and buy bird feeders and bird food so the birds did as they had done for thousands of years. They found what food they needed to survive. So in that instance the birds would be fending for themselves and as a result the strong birds survived and made the species stronger with each passing breeding season. One of the main arguments used by the opponents of feeding birds during the winter months.

The flip side of the issue could very well be that by helping the birds with their winter feeding that you are giving the different species that may be in danger of dying off and becoming extinct, just the edge they need to make it through until the next breeding season. Therefore giving them the chance to continue to keep their particular species off the endangered list and actually survive. You see it can be looked at in different ways and is hard to argue against either point of view according to how you look at the subject.

It just seems that there should be a way to look at the the issue from both sides and come up with a compromise that will be satisfactory for both sides. One article I read some time back used the scenario that buy feeding the birds, you made them dependent on you for food and they would start to lose the ability to find their natural food supplies that had kept their species alive and well for thousands of years. Another article said that by depriving them of much needed food in the winter when plants had stopped producing flowers and berries for the season, actually put them in danger of hardship from a lack of food supply to adequately take care of the flock until the following growing season returned.

It seems to me that we could locate any feeders near and around the natural food supplies of what ever species you are trying to feed and as the winter season starts to wind down, you could reduce the amount of feed you allow the birds to have to a point where you force them to go back to the source they know best, Mother Nature. By doing it this way you can help them through the hard part of the year and ween them gently back to their normal habits without drastically changing what they are used to seeing each day.

In Summary

If we work together at trying to figure out a good solution to how we can feed the birds in the winter, and how not to make them totally depend on us to the point where we put their lifestyle in danger, we should as intelligent humans, find a way to make life better for both us and the birds. Don’t feed the birds just for your viewing pleasure, think of their welfare and do what is best for them. If that means hanging feeders in obscure areas of your property that are not easily viewed but are close to natural food sources for the birds than you really need to think more about the welfare of the birds than your own pleasure of having the birds close up for your viewing pleasure. Get a nice pair of binoculars or a small telescope and you can still get a good view of the birds as they go about their daily routine.
